Comprehensive Eye Exams
On average, we recommend scheduling an appointment once every two years to ensure your eyes are remaining healthy. If you have been diagnosed with an eye condition, however, we recommend scheduling an appointment once or twice a year depending on the severity.
Macular degeneration is a deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them through the optic nerve from the eye to the brain for processing. The macula, or the center of the retina, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye and controls our ability to see and process information.
Glaucoma occurs from damage to the eye’s optic nerve and can often lead to loss of vision and blindness. To detect glaucoma, our highly trained doctors will perform a proper screening to determine severity, examine the damage, and help you manage your glaucoma.
LASIK stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis and is a popular surgery to correct vision problems. LASIK can help people who are nearsighted or farsighted, as well those who have astigmatism.
Dry Eye Treatment
Optom-Eyes Vision Care Optometry is proud to offer dry eye treatment for our patients. Ocular Surface Disease, also known as dry eye, can occur from certain medications, naturally by aging, or as a symptom arising from systemic diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, or Lupus. If you have a minor case of dry eye, you may be experiencing irritation, excessive tearing, fluctuating vision, and/or a burning sensation in your eyes.
Astigmatism is one of the most common vision conditions, and most people have some form of astigmatism. It can be caused by an irregular-shaped cornea or an abnormal curvature of the lens.
Minor astigmatism may not affect your vision or require treatment. However, many cases cause blurred or distorted vision, which can result in pain and headaches. Typically, astigmatism is present with nearsightedness and farsightedness.
During your examination, we test for astigmatism using a phoropter and retinoscope, which both measure refraction.
Depending on the severity of the astigmatism, we can provide eyeglasses or contact lenses to help correct your condition. There is also a wide range of other solutions that may also work for you. We would be happy to discuss your options with you at your appointment.
Sunglasses are designed to protect your eyes from sunlight, but some kinds protect your eyes better than others. Though tinted lenses are better than nothing, you should look for lenses that also block ultraviolet light.
There are many types of sunglasses available in a wide range of prices. There are plenty of affordable sunglasses that will protect your eyes.
Emergency Eye Care
There are times when you may need immediate care for your eyes. Any time you experience trauma to your eyes, you need to be seen. If you get anything in your eyes, especially chemicals or foreign objects, you should be seen so that you don’t make your eyes worse. You don’t want to scratch your eyes because something is in them.
If your eyes are painful and red, it is important to be seen by a doctor. If you can’t open your eyes because they are swollen shut, you need to be seen. Any time you lose your vision or experience a change in vision, you need to come right in! If you experience flashing lights, which can also cause vomiting, you should hurry right in.
The sooner you treat your eyes, the quicker you can get relief and start to feel better. You will also ensure that you don’t cause further damage by waiting. You can do a lot of damage by waiting to be seen.
